Matt Brindley – Project Architect
Trisha Brindley – Concept Development

Located on a steep site with a panoramic view of water and boats, this house was designed as a transformation from a dismal split level, which held no charm for the client. However, after reviewing Council controls, it was decided an alteration would provide a much larger house on the land than a new development approval.

To achieve this, one side wall of the original was left standing with the remainder demolished. The rear swimming pool was also retained but upgraded.

The resultant house has three bedrooms, TV area, bathroom and 20-seat cinema on the lower level with living/dining area, separate family room and kitchen on the upper level. The main bedroom and ensuite with its own rooftop terrace sits above the double height entry and double carport.

To simplify the structure and expedite an inexpensive and easily built solution, the building was designed with a lightweight timber frame with 50mm insulating polystyrene sheet cladding finished in a reinforced plaster to give the appearance of masonry.

The use of these construction methodologies allowed great flexibility in sculptural design with a cantilevered form enclosing the two northern terraces. The vaulted ceiling over the living room is expressed externally in a curved metal roof.
