Client: T and B Jones
Matt Brindley – Project Architect
Trisha Brindley – Interiors and concept development
Having previously designed an alteration to their home in inner Sydney, the client again engaged Swell Architects to design a new home to replace the post war bungalow on this suburban site.
The house consists of 4 bedrooms, ensuite, main bathroom, family room, winter living room and laundry at the upper level with rumpus room, office, bathroom and double garage at the lower level.
The clients’ wish to be able to separate adults from children but still allow supervision informed the design decision to create two living areas to the upper level along the east side of the house with bedrooms to the west. The two living areas are expressed externally by the butterfly roof configuration and by the change in materials.
The butterfly roof provides not only a visual cue but also collects all rainwater into a central roof section draining to the 10,000-litre tank under the house.
The winter living room opens onto a full-width verandah, which allows the clients to view the street while maintaining privacy. The northern family room opens to the sun drenched rear terrace, landscaped gardens and swimming pool. The lower rumpus room opens out to the landscaped front garden.
The clients have told us: “It’s changed the way we live.”
