Matt Brindley – Project Director
Eumundi, southwest of Noosa is famous around Australia for its open-air markets, 3 times a week, attracting over 2 million visitors a year. As well as being a market town with heritage buildings, Eumundi also attracts “Grey Nomads” on tour around Australia for overnight stays.
ECCO engaged Swell Architects to design an amenities building for not only market goers but for the increasing numbers of overnight visitors. Swell’s concept was to recycle and re-badge a used shipping container to show the town’s forward attitude to sustainability and for ease of construction on site. The building contains individual shower and toilet facilities for each sex plus ambulant toilets and an accessible sanitary compartment.
Eumundi also hosts the annual Body Art Carnivale. Swell Architects chose to decorate one side of the building facing the town by display multiple images from the past Body Art Carnivales. We used the photographic work and graphic design skills of a local photographer, “Lisasista” to produce the artwork.
