The concept of ‘the small house’ and modularization has always been of interest to Swell Architects. These Breakaway houses can be started with one ‘box’ with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/living/dining area – each additional module could also contain an ensuite/robe with the one large space available for use as another bedroom, an office/studio, a guest room or even a rental. The boxes can be joined by an indoor/ outdoor dining area as well as an outdoor room with BBQ area and fireplace. Small, glamorous and easily maintained these houses are especially suitable for retiring singles or couples.
Featuring strong sculptural forms, when built as a single house 3 bedroom house, Breakaway could be finished in 30 days and carried from factory to site on just five truckloads. The building consists of lightweight framing, it is lined with insulated fibrous cement cladding and all internal areas are designed to be prefinished and serviced simply requiring connection of the electrical switch and to the mains and plumbing beneath the house.
