When an architect and designer conceive a new house for themselves it places them in the same “head space” as their clients in terms of brief and finance while at the same time allowing the opportunity to try out new ideas. Various agendas eventually coalesced in an elegant timeless design in which it was a pleasure to live and in which we experienced complete privacy.
The Peta House is located at the end of a cul-de-sac. It was designed and approved as a 3 bedroom house with an end deck opening from the living area into the treetops. The site has a 1:3 slope, which meant it lay untouched for many years, as various owners tried to wrestle with the site’s topography.
After testing various solutions, a decision was made to create a simple pavilion on an elevated platform so that the house floated above the landscape. All rooms are flooded with light including the sky lit southern bathroom with full-length window to the bush reserve behind.
The northern glass wall has a visual rhythm created by the interplay of fixed panels with louvres. The internal blind system operates as both thermal barrier and privacy screen to the rest of the street.
The house was sold in 2009. The new owner had this to say:
“It’s not only the thoughtfulness of the design that makes this home such a wonderful place to live. It’s the quality of materials; the nuance of design and the sheer attention to detail and craftsmanship that makes the place so special…This is a home that invites the outside in…. And yet, it’s a home where we kick off our shoes, let the dog run wild and just chill out with a beer in front of the TV.”
